The kitchen had reached a point where it was creating more frustration than enjoyment. For a homeowner who genuinely loved to cook, the layout made even simple meals feel more difficult than they needed to be. Broken-up stretches of counter space left very little room for preparing ingredients, setting out cookware, or working comfortably without constantly rearranging things.
Storage was another major challenge. With limited cabinetry and very few practical places to keep everyday essentials, the countertops had become crowded with small appliances, dishes, and other items that would normally be tucked away. The kitchen could be clean and still feel cluttered, making the room feel smaller, busier, and less inviting.
Just beyond the kitchen, the formal dining room had become valuable square footage the homeowners rarely used. Although it held a full set of tableware, the room felt disconnected from the way the family actually lived. The heavy brown finishes also felt out of place beside the warm grays of the updated living room. The homeowners needed more than a cosmetic update. They needed a kitchen that felt connected, comfortable, and designed around the way they wanted to cook, gather, and live.

The first step was removing the wall between the kitchen and dining room. That single change completely reshaped how the homeowners could experience the space, turning two disconnected rooms into one open and inviting place to cook, gather, and spend time together.
The dining room had rarely been used, so opening it to the kitchen allowed us to reclaim that square footage and make it part of everyday life again. Instead of feeling tucked away while preparing meals, the homeowner could now stay connected to family and guests, creating a home that felt more natural, welcoming, and in tune with the way they actually live.

For a homeowner who truly enjoys cooking, limited counter space can quickly make the kitchen feel frustrating. The existing layout left very little room to spread out, prepare ingredients, or move comfortably between tasks, so creating a generous work surface became one of the most important parts of the design.
Because the room was long and narrow, the island had to be planned carefully to preserve comfortable walkways around the appliances. We were able to incorporate a nearly 7-foot-3-inch island that added the prep space the homeowner had been missing, along with additional storage and seating at one end. It became more than a work surface. It became the place where meals are prepared, conversations happen, and people naturally want to gather.

The old kitchen lacked the storage needed to keep everyday items off the countertops. Small appliances, cookware, and kitchen essentials had nowhere else to go, which made the room feel cluttered even when it was clean.
We designed a built-in pantry and added cabinetry that gave each item a place of its own. By improving the storage without overcrowding the room, we were able to create a kitchen that feels calmer, more organized, and much easier to use. The countertops can now stay open for cooking and gathering, allowing the space to feel as good as it looks.

Once the sink was moved, the existing window was left at a height that clearly reflected the kitchen’s former layout. Rather than allowing it to feel like an awkward reminder of what had been there before, we reworked the opening to match the height and spacing of the windows in the former dining room.
That attention to detail helped tie the entire space together. The windows now feel balanced and intentional, while bringing more natural light into the kitchen. The finished room does not feel like two spaces that were simply combined. It feels cohesive, comfortable, and as though the home was always meant to work this way.
